Anthony J. May

Anthony J. May is an experienced litigator who joined the firm in 2025. Drawing from his years of representing individuals in complex civil rights matters, Anthony’s practice focuses on high-stakes litigation, including fiduciary disputes, will contests, and other contested estate and trust issues, as well as commercial and appellate matters.

Anthony brings a strong appellate background and a deep understanding of procedural strategy to each case. He has represented clients in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Maryland’s appellate courts and has authored numerous appellate and amicus briefs in significant cases impacting Maryland law. Clients and colleagues value his strategic approach, meticulous preparation, and ability to navigate complex factual and legal issues through every stage of litigation.

Anthony previously served as the Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellow at The Public Justice Center, where he represented clients in appellate and trial matters. He also clerked for the Honorable Deborah Sweet Eyler (Ret.) on the Appellate Court of Maryland.

Anthony is a frequent lecturer on litigation strategy and emerging legal issues, including the impact of artificial intelligence in employment matters and in appellate practice. His commentary has been featured in national media outlets including The New York Times, Law360, and the American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Trial Magazine.

Anthony serves on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service and the Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellowship, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he teaches Advanced Appellate Advocacy also serves on the Alumni Board.

        Representative Cases

          • Secured a trial victory on behalf of a gay man claiming employment discrimination against a religious employer under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Maryland Fair Employment Practices Act.
          • Represented two Charles County Commissioners in securing a permanent injunction against another sitting Commissioner to prevent ongoing employment discrimination in the County. 
          • Won a federal jury trial on behalf of a deaf and autistic woman against the Enfield, Connecticut Board of Education for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
          • Worked with a team of attorneys who secured a $48 million historic settlement on behalf of three men wrongfully convicted at age 16 for the 1983 murder of their 14-year-old classmate. 
          • Successfully appealed the dismissal of an employment discrimination matter against Duke University under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
          • Secured a settlement with the Miami-Dade County Public School system to ensure accessible technology on behalf of a blind school psychologist. 
          • Represented three individuals with disabilities who were the first to successfully challenge their unlawful receipt of subminimum wages under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

          Appellate

          • Secured an appellate victory and oral argument in the Appellate Court of Maryland in Coates v. Charles County Board of Commissioners.
          • Argued and won an appeal in the North Carolina Court of Appeals in Hoaglin v. Duke University Health Systems, Inc.
          • Argued before the Supreme Court of Maryland in Doe v. Catholic Relief Services.
          • Argued before the Supreme Court of Maryland in Johnson v. Department of Health.
          • Successfully argued as amicus counsel in Ceccone v. Carroll Home Services, LLC.
          • Successfully argued before the Appellate Court of Maryland in Pinnacle Group, LLC v. Kelly.
